与《生化危机》相比，《鬼屋魔影》系列并不强调泛滥成灾的血腥屠戮镜头，制作者更多的是利用黑暗和音效营造出悬念气氛把玩家禁锢在无休无止的心惊胆战中，这种独特的手法在《鬼屋魔影4》得到了淋漓极致的表现，所以这款游戏应属于悬念恐怖，而不是单纯的血腥恐怖。可以肯定的是《鬼屋魔影5》必将让你的神经更加紧崩！
故事主角同样由系列作的‘Edward Carnby’担任，并且在纽约市中心的中央公园内冒险，虽然说是中央公园，但冒险场景可不是只限制在中央公园里，一开始原本和谐的都市，却只有主角看得到地狱般的场景，接着开始发生许多超自然的现象。而主角在经过了 50 几年后，外貌却跟以前没甚么变，这也是本作所要探讨的谜题，根据制作小组的说法，《鬼屋魔影：死亡界线》很可能是系列作故事的完结篇，所有的谜题都会在这个续作里交代完成。
