作为《生化危机》系列的分支《生化危机：爆发》的进化版，本作的最大优点在于特点鲜明的五个章节，真正做到了每一章都有新的恐怖刺激。游戏登场人物与一代相同，每一位角色的性能优势在相应的关卡中体现得淋漓尽致。游戏的场景延伸到各种场所，包括动物园在内，令人惊讶的是动物园内的动物也遭受T病毒的感染，包括遭受T病毒感染而产生变异的大象，这可以说是历代《生化危机》中最具“份量”的敌人之一。单机模式中玩家可以跟AI控制人物结伴同行，线上模式最多可4人同时一起进行。游戏是以浣熊市为舞台，由于雨伞公司的巨大制药工厂不慎外漏，T病毒因而蔓延出去，导致整座城市在短短时间化为死城，遭受感染的生物们都丧尸化，并开始袭击其它生物或人类。为了解决这场灾难，美国政府决定以战略导弹将整座城毁灭，以防止丧尸病毒扩散。
