《前线之战火之源》是一款FPS游戏，与《光环》和《战争机器》等科幻背景FPS游戏不同，《前线》是以现代战争为背景展开的。游戏的制作公司是曾经参与开发《战地》系列游戏的KAOS Studios，玩家在游戏中不仅可以选择执行任务的种类，也可以选择何时执行并根据情况要求选择不同的兵种和装备。在游戏初期玩家只能扮演普通士兵，但可以选择的范围却十分宽泛，不仅包括武器、车辆，而且还包括所扮演士兵的兵种，比如突击队员或狙击手。而根据所选兵种的不同，玩家接受的任务以及在部队中所扮演的角色也会有所变化，从这个角度讲，游戏具备一些RPG游戏的特征。
